Twenty One Pilots
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have spent fifteen years building one of the most honest bodies of work in modern music.
Biography
The Story of
Twenty One Pilots
Twenty One Pilots was born in Columbus, Ohio in 2009 when Tyler Joseph formed the group alongside Nick Thomas and Chris Salih. After their self-titled debut, the group built a loyal following through relentless touring and a genuinely personal connection with their fans.
When Thomas and Salih departed, drummer Josh Dun joined and the chemistry was immediate. The duo's approach defied any genre: blending alternative rock, hip-hop, synth-pop and reggae while maintaining an emotional honesty few contemporary artists could match.
Their major label debut Vessel (2013) introduced them to the world. But Blurryface (2015) turned them into a phenomenon — the first album in history to have every single track certified at least gold by the RIAA. Singles like "Stressed Out" and "Ride" became generational anthems.
With Trench (2018) they built an entire dystopian universe — the city of Dema, its nine Bishops, and a resistance called the Banditos. This narrative ran through Clancy (2024) and reached its conclusion with Breach in September 2025, their most ambitious and best-selling record to date.
A Community Like No Other
What sets Twenty One Pilots apart is the Skeleton Clique — one of the most dedicated fanbases in modern music. Tyler and Josh have always prioritized authenticity over commercial appeal, often speaking openly about mental health, faith, and the struggles of creative life. This vulnerability has forged a bond that transcends typical artist-fan relationships.
Their live shows are legendary: Tyler climbing scaffolding, Josh performing drum solos on platforms suspended over the crowd, confetti cannons, and crowds singing every word in unison. The energy at a TOP concert feels less like a performance and more like a collective experience.
Awards & Recognition
Beyond their Grammy wins, the duo has earned Billboard Music Awards, MTV VMAs, and American Music Awards. They've headlined festivals worldwide including Lollapalooza, Reading & Leeds, and Firefly. In 2016, they became the first rock act since 2009 to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Stressed Out."
The Grammy Moment, 2017
Tyler and Josh won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Stressed Out". True to form, they collected the award in their underwear — fulfilling a promise made to fans years before. It became one of the most iconic moments in Grammy history.
Regional at Best — The Underground Years
Released independently in 2012, Regional at Best marked the arrival of Josh Dun. It was withdrawn as part of the Fueled by Ramen deal, becoming a collector's artifact and testament to the band's origins.
Vessel — The Major Label Debut (2013)
Vessel introduced the duo to a global audience. Songs like "Car Radio," "Holding on to You" and "House of Gold" showcased Joseph's range as a songwriter.
Blurryface — The Album That Changed Everything (2015)
Blurryface became the first album in history to have every track certified at minimum gold by the RIAA. The concept: a fictional character named Blurryface representing Joseph's deepest insecurities.
Trench — Welcome to Dema (2018)
Trench transported listeners to a dystopian city ruled by nine Bishops. It launched an elaborate ARG, fan lore investigation, and the multi-album narrative arc that would define the band's next chapter.
Scaled & Icy and Clancy — Light and Dark (2021–2024)
Scaled and Icy offered a deliberately bright contrast to Trench. In 2024, Clancy returned to the Dema narrative, closing with the words "Hello, Clancy" — a direct handoff to the final chapter.
Breach — The Final Chapter (2025)
Released September 12, 2025, Breach debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with the biggest vinyl sales week for a rock album since 1991. All 13 tracks entered the charts simultaneously.
